What is your favorite project that you have worked on at JCM and why?
It's difficult to pick just one. In the last 16 years I have been worked on thousands of projects and have had access to private estates, encountered rare plants, wandered through mature forests, observed eagles and otters, and have even flown in a helicopter and have been chased by a bull (in Pennsylvania not Pamplona). Phase II bog turtle surveys are usually fun as trudging waist-deep in muck and encountering snakes, frogs, salamanders and snapping turtles is certainly a diversion from daily paperwork. The AstraZeneca/Blue Ball/Rock Manor Golf Course project at Rockland Road and US 202 was noteworthy in that DelDOT, the regulatory agencies, engineers, and consultants all worked so well together on this huge long-term project that became a real benefit to the community. Excavating a 12,000-gallon fuel oil tank at the old Schmalbach-Lubeca site was certainly a challenge for both personnel and excavating equipment on site. Although it was stressful at the time, removing the buried debris from the backyards in the Victoria Woods residential community was probably the most memorable because we were resourceful in both the planning and operating phases such as using helical piers to permanently support the foundations of several dwellings at the edge of the massive pit, and getting DelDOT's permission to access the rear yards through their maintenance facility to avoid damaging landscaped front yards and public streets.
